18 ? Samuel David Collins married Mary Doherty in Newcastle on 4th April 1892. He was a farmer up until about 1901, but from then on until his death his main occupation was 'coal miner'. His NSW birth certificate is 10298/1866.
In the 1899-1900 NSW state election in the Hunter Division at the West Maitland voting booth, Samuel David Collins (farmer - aged 33) is recorded residing at Louth Park, West Maitland.
In the 1903 NSW state elections Hunter electoral roll, East Maitland voting booth, Samuel David Collins (miner - aged 37) is recorded residing at Dagworth (now Gillieston Heights). He would have been working shifts at the Dagworth Greta Colliery at the time of the elections. His wife Mary was residing at George St in East Maitland at that time.
Samuel David Collins also appears in the following Hunter Division electoral rolls:
1906 - East Maitland booth. (miner - age 40) residing at Dagworth with wife Mary (home duties - age 46).
1908 & 1909 East Maitland booth. (miner - age 42 & 43) residing at East Greta. His wife Mary was not listed.
1922 - West Maitland booth. (miner - age 56) residing at Bridge St, Homeville, with wife Mary (home duties - age 62).
1925 - West Maitland booth. (miner - age 59) residing at Ada St, Homeville, with wife Mary (home duties - age 65), married daughter Clara May Colman (nee Doherty, home duties - age 31) and Clara's husband William Colman.
1926 to 1930 - West Maitland booth. (miner - age 60-64) residing at Bridge St, Homeville, with wife Mary (home duties - age 66-70).
1932 - West Maitland booth. (pensioner - age 66) residing at Capp St, Telarah, with wife Mary (home duties - age 72).
1936 - Maitland booth. (pensioner - age 70) was recorded residing at Government Rd, Homeville, West Maitland, with wife Mary Collins (home duties - age 76).
Samuel Collins was the informant for his wife Mary Josephine Collin's death registration on 25 Aug 1937 at West Maitland and their address at the time of her death was Owlpen Lane, Farley (a suburb of Lochinvar, West Maitland), NSW.
Widower Samuel David Collins died on 7 Sep 1946 in the Maitland Hospital at West Maitland, aged 80. His last place of residence according to his death certificate was 98 Close St, Morpeth, City of Maitland - where he had been living under the care of his daughter Clara May Colman (nee Collins) and her husband William Hector Colman. Tragically for Samuel, his daughter Clara had suddenly died from a brain haemmorhage only 2 months earlier on 14th July 1946 in Maitland Hospital. The resulting stress of seeing his only remaining child die is likely to have exacerbated Samuel's heart failure shortly after in the same hospital.

19 Note: A few memories from my mother re- her Grandmother Mary Ann Quinn..........She lived at The Range in Rockhampton, she must have moved there after the husband died, mum said she used visit them in a carriage, she wouldn't get out but would give them lollies from the carriage......the reason??? maybe Koongal was a downmarket area or maybe the son in law was home and she didn't approve, although mums recollections of her father are very vague, the only memory she told me was of him meeting in a park when she was about 8,Mary Ann Quinn later moved in with them at Koongal, for how long I don't know. Her birth details on the government records name her as Ann Connell and her baptismal records do the same. She is registered as being born 1849,but her death on 27/5/1923 has her aged 72 ?
